How to Choose a Creative College

How to Choose a Creative College The following piece was written by Elaina Loveland. Elaina is an admissions consultant for students pursuing creative degrees. She has two published books Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians, and Writers, and Creative Careers: Paths for Aspiring Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians, and Writers. If you want to major in the arts and earn a degree in Art, Drama, Dance, Music, or Creative Writing, it might take some research to find the right program for you. Unlike degrees that are offered at nearly every college and university (think History or Biology), creative programs often vary greatly by institution. Here are 10 questions you need to ask to narrow down your search.1. How much time do you want to spend pursuing your passion? If you want to live and breathe your creative area of interest 80% of the time, youll be most interested in BFA programs. If youd rather spend less time than that practicing your art, but still want to major in it and leave room for electives that interest you and perhaps do a double major or have a minor outside of your creative field, consider BA or BS programs instead.2. Is an audition, art portfolio, or creative writing portfolio required for admission? Many of the most competitive programs in the arts have an arts-based requirement like an audition, art portfolio, or creative writing portfolio for admission to the program. You will need to investigate the programs you are interested in to find out their requirements. Its important to follow guidelines carefully because each school has different requirements.3. How much can you perform, exhibit art, or publish? Take the time to find out exactly what kinds of performing, exhibiting, or publishing opportunities are available to you in each program you are considering. Find out if you can participate fully in these opportunities during your freshman year or if you have to wait until you are an upperclassman. Learn how many opportunities there are per semester and if there are any opportunities off-campus that could bolster your rsum.4. Who are your teachers? Unlike faculty in other disciplines, as an artist, you will be working more closely with program faculty throughout your college career rather than taking just one or two classes with them and moving on like students in other disciplines frequently do. The best faculty have extensive experience in the field and are often still practicing artists. Do they have industry contacts? Do they have advanced education like an MFA (master of fine arts degree)?5. Are there master classes with guest artists or other industry guests? The most competitive programs usually offer master classes with renowned artists, actors, choreographers, musicians, and writers. Some programs also offer specialized symposiums that focus on topics like careers in the arts or nights with industry guests that can offer advice to upcoming graduates. Bringing in talent from the outside to help students with their understanding of their discipline can be a valuable asset to an arts program.6. What are the facilities like? Do the programs facilities look professional? You are going to be spending a lot of time in classrooms, in rehearsal spaces, in studios, and on stage, and you want to make sure those spaces exhibit a professional atmosphere that can reflect the success of its students and graduates. Access is also something to consideryou will want to make sure that rehearsal spaces are accessible beyond normal business hoursan artists work is never done. If you need to practice at 3:00 p.m. on a Saturday, you are going to want to make sure that you will be able to do it.7. Who are the alumni? Find out where the alumni of the program are now in their careers. Does one of them have your dream job? They should. You want to attend a program where you know that it is capable of teaching you what you need to know to be successful in your career afterward. Looking at the success of alumni is a good way of measuring this.8. Are scholarships available? While not all institutions have artistic scholarships, it is an extra bonus if you can find a program that meets your criteria and can offer you the possibility of a scholarship. Most scholarship money for the arts is available from the institution itself so dont overlook scholarship possibilities. If you are academically talented, you may also be eligible for academic merit scholarships, so be sure to investigate those scholarships as well. Leave no corner unturned. After graduation, if you have to take out loans, you will have to repay them, so make sure that factoring the cost of your degree is considered carefully.9. What kind of opportunities will you have for internships and part-time work? Working while in school requires time management, but its possible. Making contacts off campus can be helpful in seeking internships later in your college career. If you do take the plunge to get a part-time job in the real world, it may be beneficial to find a job related to your field of study. For example, you could work in an art gallery or museum, work at a local professional theatre company, teach dance to children at a local dance studio, work at a local symphony or opera company, or work at a local publishing company or newspaper. 10. What kind of support is there for finding a job after graduating? You should check out the support that the college will provide for you to find a job. The college career office at your school most likely has a library of books that can help you delve further into career possibilities. Your alumni office may have a list of people working in certain fields. Many make themselves available for informational interviews. Faculty members in your department may also have personal contacts with whom you can speak about career choices. Ask questions to find out what resources the colleges you are considering offer. GRE Quantitative Reasoning Strategy Trigonometry Strategies

GRE Quantitative Reasoning Strategy Trigonometry Strategies GRE/MAT Graduate School Blog While you may be taking the GRE to get into graduate school, it may relieve you to know you won’t have to use math that you’ve learned past your sophomore or junior year of high school. Long-winded and drawn out problem solving and arithmetic is not the style of the GRE. So what’s the catch? If the math is so easy, why are you even reading this article on how to tackle the math section? The challenge behind this section draws from the way these limited mathematical concepts are presented to you. In a sense, you need to often systematically deconstruct the problem in the way it’s presented, to determine what is really being asked of you. Once you are able to determine what the question is asking, the actual “number-crunching” or math involved is much less than you might think. As per ETS, here are the main points the exam is essentially assessing: basic mathematical skills understanding of elementary mathematical concepts ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods They will use the following subject matter to test your ability to successfully demonstrate competency in the above: basic shape properties (triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, etc.), exponents, integer properties, word problems. Our friends at Magoosh have built this frequency distribution to provide better insight into the types of questions asked and how high or low yield they are: The GRE quantitative section is broken up into quantitative comparison (QC) questions and problem solving questions. The QC questions involve comparing two columns and deciding if one is greater than the other, if they are both equal or if it cannot be determined. The Problem solving section entails multiple choice and free response. The lack of advanced math concepts on this exam provides students with a unique advantage. By getting enough practice and familiarity with the types of questions on the GRE, especially by taking as many practice exams as possible, a student has a high likelihood of success since the math concepts themselves are not terribly difficult and can be strengthened. Repeated exposure will be the best tool against some of the more seemingly tricky questions on the GRE. This is why one’s best friend during test prep is taking practice exams and going over the answers (with your tutors)! Make sure to always challenge yourself and stay consistent. Come test day, your hard work will surely pay off! The following is an example of a math problem that may seem complicated, but only involves simple trig concepts of a 30-60-90 triangle: What is the area of an equilateral triangle whose inscribed circle has a radius of 2? 12 16 12 sq rt._/3 16 sq rt._/3 4(3+2 sq rt._/2) To begin, draw an equilateral triangle with a circle inscribed inside. From here, you can draw a hypotenuse for a 30-60-90 right triangle from the center of the circle to either of the bottom two sides. Remember that in a 30-60-90 triangle the proportions are: So it follows that our triangle’s sides are: Now draw the altitude in for the big, equilateral triangle to find the height. Drawing in this altitude will allow you to form a bigger 30-60-90 right triangle. Using the same proportions of a 30-60-90 triangle we get the following side lengths of the larger triangle. Now you can simply use the formula to calculate the area of a triangle: Area of a Triangle = ½ (base) x (height) = ½ (4 sq rt_/3)(6) =24 sq rt_/3 x ½ =12 sq rt_/3 The answer is C! Remember to first draw a picture and remember that they will simply test basic trig and math concepts, dressed up in seemingly tricky problems! Good luck!

Tutorfair Discounted Dyslexia Training, Monday Nov. 24th

Tutorfair Discounted Dyslexia Training, Monday Nov. 24th Dyslexia Training with British Dyslexia Association and Tutorfair Have you or your child been diagnosed with dyslexia? Are you a tutor who’s been asked to support a dyslexic student? Tutorfair can help! Dyslexia is such a complicated thing to understand, not just for the person/child who has it, but also for everyone around them. Trying to learn to live with it doesn't stop with going into class from 9-5, or doing extra homework; that can only truly happen if they get the correct support needed for his/her's specific difficulty. -Nicholas B. Students with dyslexia often find studying and learning frustrating, if not impossible. Dyslexia is not conducive to traditional methods of learning to read, write, and spell. As a result, dyslexic students often benefit from additional support outside of school, like private tutors. The right tutor can make a huge difference for a student with dyslexia. With effective support, the difficulties of dyslexia can be minimised and students can become successful readers and writers. About one in ten people in the UK struggles with dyslexia. In fact, there are more searches for dyslexia tutors in London than for English and science tutors combined! That’s a huge demand! Tutorfair wants to make sure students have access to the support they need to love learning and enjoy their time in school. So we’re committed to ensuring there are qualified, well-trained tutors who can provide this much needed support. Training to provide dyslexia support is often expensive and difficult for tutors to access, which is where Tutorfair comes in! I was very lucky that I got support from a very young age learnt many different methods about how to live with it like: if I encounter a problem what to do, what methods can I use to overcome the problem. - Nicholas B. Tutorfair is teaming up with the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) to train our tutors in Practical Solutions for Dyslexia. Tutorfair and BDA will provide 25 lucky tutors with the tools they need to effectively help students who struggle with dyslexia. We’re making this course available to tutors for a serious discount! Normally, it costs £72; however Tutorfair tutors can attend for just £40!  After the course, tutors will : have an understanding of the sensory experience of what dyslexia feels like and how it affects the learning process be familiar with different types of dyslexia understand the best ways to teach children with dyslexia, according to research and learning theories have ideas and knowledge of practical teaching strategies, multisensory lesson plans and resources Sign up here to attend Practical Solutions course on Monday Nov. 24th, 2014. We plan to follow-up this training with a series of training days which, when combined, will give tutors a level-3 Accreditation in Dyslexia Support. The Nov. 24th training day is a pre-requisite for further training, so if you’re a tutor who’d like to get training, it’s very important you attend! This is also the best day to attend if you’re looking for a less in-depth overview of dyslexia. Students and parents will be able to search our database for “Dyslexia Support” to find quality, trained tutors who can provide effective learning support. As a result, more students will have more support, and can start loving to learn! Now that I'm in my mid 20's, lots of people say that they wouldn't have known whatsoever that I had a really severe form of Dyslexia/Dyspraxia. For me, that is the greatest compliment. Accommodating each child/person’s specific needs, as soon as possible (and being incredibly patient with it) would mean that they can carry on with their lives without any difficulties, and without being afraid.   -Nicholas B. British Dyslexia Association The British Dyslexia Association provide dyslexia and dyscalculia training for schools, teachers, companies, and individuals. The BDA aims to be the voice of the dyslexic community in the UK and enable individuals with dyslexia to reach their full potential.

This is a great feature to take advantage of so that you can easily pick and choose from local restaurants. On the flip side, if you’re looking for a job, DoorDash just might be a good fit for you. “Dashers” drive around to different restaurants and deliver orders to customers, plus it’s a very flexible job because they get to determine their own working hours. Eat 24 Available in more than 1,500 different cities in the U.S., Eat 24 is a food delivery app owned by Grubhub. Pros: Eat 24 provides an array of options. Eat 24 also offers exclusive promotions that will help you save on the price of your meal. What’s more, there are no delivery fees. Another really cool feature of Eat 24 is that you get to read other customers’ reviews and ratings of different restaurants. This can be super helpful if you’re the kind of person who wants to see what other people think about a certain establishment, which can help guide your own decision-making process. Cons: Restaurants that you order from may possibly charge a delivery fee and set an order minimum. As it’s owned by Grubhub, Eat 24 may seem a little too similar to its parent company. So if you’re already a Grubhub user, you may not find much incentive to use Eat 24. via Pexels Eat Purely For those of you who want to order in but still crave something delicious and healthy, Eat Purely is a great choice. Based in Chicago, this food delivery service boasts “healthy, delicious, chef-made meals delivered in about 20 minutes,” according to its website. Cons: As Eat Purely is based in Chicago, it is not as readily accessible to different cities throughout the U.S. as other apps are. While there’s no delivery fee, Eat Purely does automatically tack on a $3 tip. Infographic by Kailey Walters Grubhub Even if you don’t know much about food delivery apps or have never used one before, you’ve probably at least heard of Grubhub. Grubhub allows you to easily track your order so that you’ll know exactly where it is and when it’s arriving at your front door. Cons: While Grubhub itself doesn’t have delivery fees, some of the restaurants you order from may charge a set delivery fee. Postmates offers a helpful Unlimited plan, which charges $10 a month, or $84 a year, in exchange for free delivery on all orders above $20. This feature can be especially useful if you make purchases over $20 on a somewhat regular basis. However, if you don’t usually order over $20, this program may not be entirely worth it for you. Cons: Postmates charges a delivery fee that ranges from $4-$10, as well as an additional service fee during busier times. Seamless While the Seamless app is available in more than 600 U.S. cities, it is most often used by restaurants in New York City. So, if you live in New York City or spend a lot of time there, getting this app on your phone is sure to be a helpful decision. Pros: There are no added delivery fees! You can complete your order with just a few simple clicks, thanks to an easy search, convenient payment options like Venmo, and order tracking that keeps you up to date on the status of your delivery. Convenience of use is, after all, super important to customers so take advantage of Seamless to get that seamless ordering experience! Seamless offers a number of exclusive discounts and promos that you’ll be sure to want to take advantage of. Seamless provides options from thousands of restaurants, meaning that you’ll have plenty of venues and menus to choose from. Cons: Although Seamless does offer options from many restaurants, it provides only 25 different types of cuisine significantly less compared to other apps such as Grubhub. While there is no delivery fee, this app does often have a minimum that you need to order. So if you were just looking to get something small, you may need to order more to meet that minimum requirement (which could potentially be a bad idea, since you don’t want to waste food). Or simply go with another delivery app for the time being. via Pexels UberEats Different from the Uber car service app, UberEats allows you to access food from many different restaurants and grocery stores near you. Pros: If you’re already familiar with the Uber app, using UberEats should be a breeze because the app is designed very similarly. Being familiar with its user-friendly interface is definitely a plus if you want to have an easy, smooth experience with the app. You’ll certainly have plenty of options to choose from, as UberEats offers more than 70 different types of cuisine. More options means you won’t be running out of food to choose from anytime soon! The customer service is often reliable, as the UberEats drivers are usually kind and efficient. Plus, they’re very good at keeping customers up to date when tracking orders. Payment is fairly convenient, as you can choose to pay with either your Uber account or with a credit card. Cons: UberEats charges a $5 delivery fee, which could potentially seem like a lot when it’s tacked on to the price of your meal. This price might even increase if the UberEats delivery drivers are extra busy, so just make sure to account for that. With all of these different food delivery apps to choose from, you won’t be running out of meal options anytime soon. Take advantage of these great services and discounts to get the most out of your food delivery experience!

Grades The Holiday Season Slump - TutorNerds

Grades The Holiday Season Slump - TutorNerds Grades and The Holidays: Beat the Slump Now that everyone is back from Thanksgiving break, many high school students find it difficult to get back into the academic groove (READ: Thanksgiving Study Catch-Up Time). Most students have been working hard since the end of August and are ready for a long-term break. However, its still important to stay focused between now and December 20, when the next break starts a private Irvine academic tutor can help you stay motivated. Senioritis shouldnt set in until April or May 2015. In fact, its better not to let senioritis set in at all. December is way too early to let go of academic responsibilities but it’s a good time to reevaluate what is reasonable and what is not. Successful students should ask themselves the following questions this time of year. 1. Can I handle my academic load as it is now? If you are feeling entirely exhausted and unable to keep up the pace in December, now is the time to reevaluate educational commitments. Some things are flexible while others are not. If you are planning to take the SAT or ACT in the spring but think that you might not be able to handle it, consider taking it in February instead (READ: A Timeline Study Guide for the SAT). However, if you have signed up for an AP class, you are now committed to taking the exam in May. Can you handle everything on your plate? What can you cut off the list? For example, if you are doing volunteer work for high school credit you may be able to put that off until the summer so that you can focus on your current academic commitments. 2. Are my extracurricular activities reasonable? Many students have signed up for extracurricular activities. This is a great thing to do, of course, but not at the expense of grades in core subjects. Students who are signed up for sports, arts and music, or community service activities should consider whether they are doing too much or perhaps not enough. Many students have overextended their schedule while other students may find that they are far behind in activities that would be impressive on a college application. December is a great time to think about subtracting or adding extracurricular activities (READ: End of the Grading Period Crunch Time). 3. Is my schedule consistent? Now is a good time to take a look at consistency in education. Many students put things off until the last minute during the month of December simply due to fatigue. Unfortunately, this can backfire. You may save 5 minutes now only to spend 15 minutes later and end up in a panic. If you are starting to feel as though you do not have the same amount of consistency that you had in August, speak with your tutor about a new schedule that might be reasonable and ask him or her to help you stay organized. 4. Do my grades meet my expectations? If you know that youre an A student in most of your subjects, but you have been sliding by with a B recently, youre probably suffering from a holiday season slump. Its important to talk with your family about the amount of time that you will need to study between now and January 1st. Many adults have one or two weeks off from work and dont need to look at their email or listen to their voicemails until they go back in January. However, most college prep students will have some work to do over the winter holiday break. Sometimes its difficult for relatives to remember what is expected of a high school student during this time of year (READ: Ask a Nerd! Grades and AP Class). Let your parents know ahead of time about the amount of hours you may need to spend studying, preparing assignments, or studying for a standardized test during the last two weeks of December. The holidays should be a fun time. You should enjoy family, friends, travel, gifts, and plenty of sweet treats. However, dont let all of these distractions take you away from your college prep tasks. Make a plan now and stick to it for the remainder of the month to give you the best chance of success for the rest of the academic year. Youre about halfway done with the school year, so enjoy yourself but keep your eye on the prize. All blog entries, with the exception of guest bloggers, are written by Tutor Nerds. Summer of Endless Opportunities

Summer of Endless Opportunities With summertime officially upon us, our instincts tell us we should be spending these longest days of the year close to the water perhaps at the beaches of Southern California, or at the shores of Lake Coeur dAlene near Spokane, WA. But wait. Perhaps even better opportunities await us this summer? Yes, I am suggesting summer school. Why? College admission has become even more competitive over the last years (see movie Admission staring Paul Rudd). Applying for a job will be even harder. Thats why summer school constitutes a real opportunity to increase you chances. Moreover, during the summer term class size are smaller, and there is a chance to get to know your professor on a personally level. I also suggest hiring a tutor. Professional tutors work over the summers too but have less students. This means great tutors are easier to get and might be willing to teach at a lower rate. So, have fun and be smart this summer. Chinese Has Become The Most Tutored Language

Chinese Has Become The Most Tutored Language Chinese has become the most tutored language. The Chinese New Year (recently celebrated on February 19) is an example of this phenomenon. There are many schools which used the Chinese New Year to promote Mandarin courses to its parents and students. This is not a surprise because Mandarin Chinese has risen to the most popular choice among second languages in recent years. Chineses number one position is somewhat of a surprise because Spanish seemed to be destined to stay as the most popular foreign language in the new millennium. For one, the US shares a 3000 miles border with Mexico our Spanish speaking neighbor. For another, in 2013 over 33 million Hispanics lived in the US, making it the largest minority to date. However, the number one position of Spanish has been fading for years. More students are now saying huan ying instead of bienvenida (welcome) in high  schools. Why? Enter the phenomenon of Mandarin the language of the Chinese. Its unprecedented growth came to be because China rose to the world stage in recent decades. The Chinese economy is today  the second largest in the world. China is a country of manufacturing prowess, and is the most important trading partner for  US enterprises. There are more  factors that contribute to the popularity of Mandarin. For one, most babies adopted in the US are from Chinese parents. Another is the ability to speak Chinese has become hot ticket on college applications as well as a starred addition to executive résumés. The outcome of these trends have led to an exponential growth of the number of students in learning Chinese in the US. If youre not already familiar with Mandarin, now its the time to learn a few basic Chinese words: Hello n?h?o I am fine w? h?n h?o Do you speak English? n? huì shu? y?ngwén ma Thank you xiè xie n? women N?rén I love you W? ài n? Yes, learning even these six words can be challenging. How are these phonetic symbols pronounced? (e.g. n?h?o nee how). Or in what order do the Chinese structure their sentences? Intrinsic Definition Chemistry - Understanding the Experience of Birth

Intrinsic Definition Chemistry - Understanding the Experience of BirthThe term intrinsic definition refers to a person's sense of how he or she feels about something, whether it is a person a job, an idea, a food item, or a sport. In the scientific community, the term is used to describe an experience that takes place without outside influence. The common example is that of a child who has an experience with a particular word, yet does not learn to spell that word.In the case of x-rays, for example, an x-ray is seen as the image of x-rays. An x-ray scanner is used to take images of the human body that have been specifically designed to give a true reflection of x-rays. Once this process is done, it can be used to give an accurate, but simplified representation of the inner workings of the human body.An intrinsic definition in the context of science is the idea that such an experience can only be experienced by one who is intrinsically different from the environment. In other words, i t is a cognitively defined experience; it is about feeling like something or someone other than oneself. The important word here is different, because the person experiencing it will have a different mental state, at least to the point where the intrinsic definition would become misleading. Many experiences in life, such as losing a loved one, are unique and may lead a person on a particular path. In a similar vein, the intrinsic definition of a particular experience would be a person's experiences. This includes that of learning a new skill, gaining wealth, becoming successful, becoming powerful, and achieving a goal, among others. There are several ways to define the way a person feels about something, whether it is a person with a food item, or a sport. One might look at it as the feelings an individual has when he or she looks at a flower or picture of someone special. Another example of an intrinsic definition would be the person who wants to know why there is light at the end of the tunnel, or the individual who wishes to know if that particular piece of ice cream really tastes like something they had once consumed. When a person achieves the intrinsic definition of an experience, he or she experiences a feeling that is not usually felt or experienced by anyone else. For example, during a specific ritual, such as a baptism, a person could feel such a connection to that particular moment in time that he or she would not want to ever go through a normal physical death again. It is at these moments that a true attachment to an experience is established. The experiential definition of such an experience is only realized once the person has accepted and integrated into the full spectrum of the human experience. The person who achieves the intrinsic definition of an experience must do the same for anyone. They need to accept, understand, and integrate their experiences, while also recognizing that those experiences are unique and therefore, have their own set of i ntrinsic definitions.

Chemistry in Context 9th Edition by Timothy A. Reiff

Chemistry in Context 9th Edition by Timothy A. ReiffChemistry in Context 9th Edition by Timothy A. Reiff is a bit more rigorous in its demands of students. If you are a parent who wants to ensure that your children are receiving an education that will prepare them for the future, this is the book for you.Reiff wants to challenge a lot of students in the first chapter, when he poses the question, 'Why Chemistry?' At first, this question seems like a contradiction in terms; why study chemistry? But, as Reiff continues to clarify the concept, it becomes clear that all of the topics that it covers have a specific purpose. The second question of his, 'Why?' is of course more compelling, since it challenges the students to develop an answer to the question. The introduction of the book covers the most fundamental concepts in chemistry. The student is asked to list their major subject areas, and to explain why the latter is more important than the former. This is another way of answering the question, why study chemistry? The next question is more challenging, since this set of questions is not only asking the students why they are studying chemistry, but also why they will be using it in the future. Reiff asks them to explain why they chose chemistry as a subject for study.Reiff then asks them to determine what they learned during the laboratory portion of the course. He also asks them to explain what they learned from the written assignment. He asks them to name the topics that they learned, so that he can better give them a description of the course. This last section of the book is not written as a book in itself, but as a summary. Reiff outlines all of the topics covered in his course in this book, giving the student an idea of the breadth of the topics that they will encounter in their future courses. Reiff also details the general purpose of the materials that are used for the class, as well as how much time the student spends on each topic. He also provides a li st of recommended reading that will be of assistance to the student. These excerpts are one of the best ways of keeping the student informed about the material covered in a course. The final section of the book is the revision chapter. It is there that Reiff asks his students to follow up on the information that they have learned from the first section of the book. A student who cannot remember some of the concepts that they learned can review this information before the next lab. The next step is to give the students an evaluation of how well they learned the topics in their chemistry class. This gives them a sense of their level of achievement and indicates whether or not they should retake the course. If you have kids, parents, or teens who are taking chemistry in context 9th edition, this book is for you. For a parent who is searching for something to help children remember what they are learning, this book has everything that they need. The only thing left is to give them a littl e help from the authors to answer the question, why study chemistry? Good luck in your study of this amazing material.
